IG-NPS JOINS H.E. THE PRESIDENT DURING THIS YEAR’S MADARAKA DAY CELEBRATION IN HOMA BAY COUNTY

The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Douglas Kanja, today, 1 June 2025, joined His Excellency Hon. William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, in celebrating the 62nd Madaraka Day at Raila Odinga Stadium, Homa Bay County. Madaraka Day, observed annually on 1st June, commemorates a pivotal moment in Kenya’s history—the attainment of internal self-rule from British colonial powers in 1963. This day pays tribute to the sacrifices made by Kenyan freedom fighters and the nation’s collective journey towards sovereignty. The theme for this year’s celebration, “Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs”, underscores the strategic importance of harnessing Kenya’s blue economy for sustainable economic development, particularly Lake Victoria’s role in fisheries and aquaculture.
In his address, the President emphasized that the blue economy is a key pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, highlighting its potential for job creation, food security, revenue generation, and rural development. He noted that many countries have successfully leveraged marine resources for economic growth and affirmed Kenya’s readiness to follow suit. Today’s celebration was graced by high-ranking dignitaries, including H.E. Nataša Pirc Musar, President of Slovenia, Kenya’s Deputy President, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, Governors, and Members of Parliament, and other elected leaders. Accompanying the Inspector General were the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, Mr. Eliud Lagat, Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service, Mr. Gilbert Masengeli, Director of Criminal Investigations, Mr. Mohamed Amin, and the NPS Spokesperson, Mr. Muchiri Nyaga, AIG, among other senior police officers.
