IG KANJA JOINS CS SPORTS FOR SECURITY ASSESSMENT OF KASARANI SPORTS COMPLEX

The Inspector General of the National Police Service (IG-NPS), Mr. Douglas Kanja, this morning joined the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Mr. Salim Muvurya, for a comprehensive security review and assessment at Kasarani Sports Complex. The 48,000-seater international stadium is one of two Kenyan venues hosting this year’s CHAN football tournament, alongside Nyayo National Stadium. Uganda and Tanzania are the other host nations. The CS and the IG, alongside CHAN Head of Security Dr. Christian Emeruwa and other football and security officials, discussed the need to comply with mandatory security protocols for such international matches.

The CS acknowledged that Kenya faced the risk of a ban if further violations occurred, particularly if fans attempted to access the stadium illegally. He urged all stakeholders, ticketing agents, security personnel, and stewards to improve their performance at all levels. For his part, the IG noted that the breaches observed so far were unacceptably frequent and promised a more robust security strategy. He also proposed Fan Zone areas at strategic locations to reduce unnecessary fan movement, while emphasising the need to streamline ticketing and verification processes. Later, the IG met with senior security officers for further briefings and analysis at GSU Headquarters.

In attendance were the Principal Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Mr. Elijah Mwangi; President of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), Mr. Hussein Mohammed; Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Mr. Nicholas Musonye; Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service (DIG-KPS), Mr. Eliud Lagat; Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service (DIG-APS), Mr. Gilbert Masengeli; Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU), Mr. Ranson Lolmodooni, SAIG; and Nairobi Regional Police Commander, Mr. George Seda, AIG; among other senior football and security officials.
