The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has today concluded a two-day Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) sensitization programme for Administration Police Service (APS) recruits at the APS-LII Field Training Camp-Meru. The training, facilitated by officers from the Directorate of Countering Violent Extremism, enhanced the recruits' understanding of emerging terrorism and violent extremism threats, radicalization processes, and the evolving tactics employed by extremist groups, particularly those driven by technological advancement and online influence.
The recruits were equipped with practical knowledge and skills to identify, prevent, and respond to violent extremism and terrorism-related threats, while strengthening their capacity to safeguard communities against radicalization and recruitment into extremist networks. Key areas covered during the programme included radicalization pathways and recruitment patterns, protective security awareness, identification of suspicious persons and activities, and the evolving violent extremist threat landscape in Kenya. The facilitators further sensitized the recruits on terrorist financing, highlighting funding channels such as illicit cross-border trade, money laundering, illegitimate business operations, extortion of local businesses, and digital finance methods.
Participants were also taken through Kenya's legal and policy frameworks on Countering Violent Extremism and the critical role of the National Police Service in preventing and responding to extremist threats. During the programme, Chief Inspector Mugambi reminded the recruits that anyone can be vulnerable to radicalization and urged them to remain vigilant, uphold integrity, and exercise sound judgment as they graduate and embark on their careers as police officers.
This initiative forms part of the Directorate's broader programme to build CVE capacity among newly recruited officers ahead of their deployment. The Directorate has already successfully sensitized General Service Unit (GSU) recruits and is now extending the programme to APS and the Kenya Police Service (KPS) recruits under the ongoing Sensitization. The DCI remains committed to working with partner agencies to institutionalize counter-radicalization training within recruit curricula, reinforcing intelligence-led and community-centered approaches to protecting Kenyans from terrorism and violent extremism.
